Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom begins with 15 culturally and academically diverse students who come to class motivated and ready to learn. These students come from low-income families and have prove themselves to be ready learners although they have faced so many obstacles.
My students are are diverse individuals who enter school with many different problems from home, but we have worked very hard since September to create a sense of community in our class.
Through a new strategy introduced to the class, Readers and Writers Workshop, students have fallen in love with ready and writing because they can read any novel that they are interested in and act as their own authors in terms of their writing. Because of this, they have become active readers and our class discussions so very rich. Their quirky look at life in spite of their hardships is heartwarming and we are all looking forward to continuing this journey as readers together.
My Project
The last unit left in our curriculum is that of the "Fantasy" unit. The 7th grade team teachers selected this in order to continue engaging students in reading. As many know, students lose some focus towards the end of the year because they have been through many rounds of different assessments and such. Therefore, I wanted to engage them in their reading and have them connect personally to the themes in the book. If we read the novel, Divergent, we can explore topics such perseverance, motivation, and society values which are all topics that these students experience on a very consistent basis.
Currently, the school library has a very limited selection of fantasy novels that would really connect with these students. If we were able to have a copy of this book for each student, we would be able to let students continue reading at home, hold group literature discussions and so forth. It would be an exciting time in the classroom.
Students are aware of the shortcomings in their lives and in their education.
However, my goal this year has been to demonstrate that we can grow and learn together if we push through and have fun while we are doing it. Therefore, if students all had a copy of this wonderful novel and we could hold Socratic seminars and class readings, we would really be able to continue growing as readers who engage with books and connect with authors who have something valuable to say.
