My Students

Have you ever been uncomfortable while reading a book? Did it make you ponder about the structure of a society and the one that you live in? Reading literature with dystopian themes will help my students do just that!

I have spent my entire career teaching at a school in the heart of a large urban city with an amazingly supportive community and staff.

The students who walk through my door are diverse and dedicated. They can be gifted or high achieving. They are English learners, or can have special needs. Most of all, they are ethnically and culturally diverse. The tie that binds these children is their creative potential, curiosity, and appreciation for learning.

My Project

By reading The Hunger Games my students will not suffer the fate of "...no, but I saw the movie!" They are now at the age where they are seeking greater understanding of how the world works and through this text will not only read a story about survival and an unfair government, but will deepen their understanding of conflict, power, and relationships. I hope to layer, or augment this reading with an understanding of "classical" ideas found throughout time, current events, and foundational ideas related to technology. Ultimately, my goal is for students to be able to make judgments, describe contexts, and analyze the motives that propel the story they are reading, just as they should in their own lives.

My students need exposure to real world issues and dilemmas.

This novel will serve as the conduit to help them make those connections in a way that only a good book can. I have used my copy of this novel in previous years as a read-a-loud, and my students could not get enough. Some students were able to buy a copy to follow along with, but can't we empower students with a copy to read of their own?
