Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Scissors, glue, markers, construction paper - what elementary school classroom is complete without these supplies? Unfortunately, our class is really lacking in these basic art materials, and this is seriously impacting our ability to bring creative expression into the classroom.
Our school is a Title I school supporting many low-income, minority students.
Our soon-to-be 4th graders are a wide range of learners, with unique interests and personalities. They work together in an integrated classroom that supports both students in general education and students with special needs.
We are so proud of how kind and supportive they are of one another. In our class, you can't tell who is a "high-flier" or who may have a learning disability, because we all work together with a mindset of acceptance and respect.
Despite the fact that many of our students come from low-income, disadvantaged backgrounds, they love coming to school and try really hard every day to learn and reach their big goal of growing their minds and getting ready for middle school and beyond!
My Project
My co-teacher and I are looping up with our very special third graders into fourth grade! We had an amazing year getting to know our students and teaching them math, reading, and social studies.
However, one aspect of our curriculum we really felt was lacking was art. Many of our students are kinesthetic learners who learn best when provided with interactive, hands-on learning experiences. There were many times during the year when we could not do even simple art projects because of a serious lack of basic supplies, such as scissors, glue and construction paper.
I have requested basic art supplies such as scissors, glue sticks, crayons, construction paper, and markers so my students will be able to engage in creative, artistic projects throughout the year. By having more of these supplies available, we can add in more art throughout our day and tap into the learning strengths of our students. Our students are extremely creative and need the materials to express their thoughts and ideas to the world!
Giving our students basic art supplies such as glue, scissors, markers, and construction paper will greatly help our class have more creative art experiences during school.
Our students will be able to not only make connections between academics and art, but also explore expressing themselves creatively and tap into some of the simpler pleasures of being an elementary school student. Thank you for your support!
