Students need to know more about the genre of biographies. This is a genre that they tend to skip over. Children need to be encouraged to read biographies to learn about famous individuals from both the past and present, and understand how these individuals shaped the world we live in today.
I have the best 6th graders in the world!
They are hard-working, pleasant, and they love to learn. I am very blessed to have such an enthusiastic group this year. Many of the students are interested in history, and have expressed an interest in a biography study. They are eager to learn of famous individuals such as Ben Franklin, Helen Keller, Anne Frank, Neil Armstrong, and Martin Luther King Jr. to name a few.
My students attend an excellent public elementary school in Pennsylvania.
My Project
My students need biography chapter books. These biographies will provide a wealth of valuable information to my students. The students will choose which biography they wish to read and study, and will be encouraged to choose one that is personally meaningful to them. After studying the biography of their choice, they will complete several book report projects to dig deeper into what they have learned and apply their new knowledge. For example, they will create a poster to nominate the individual they read about for president. They will describe the candidate's qualities and background and try to convince their classmates that this person would make an excellent president. Another project will consist of the students choosing several important events from their biography and writing a diary entry from the point of view of the subject of their biography. The students will also participate in a "Dress-Up Day" to dress up as the subject of their biography and answer their classmates' questions in a brief presentation.
It is my goal to foster a love of reading and create lifelong learners.
It is the fun, engaging, and hands-on projects that students remember for a lifetime. I believe it is the perfect time to introduce my students to the history of the United States, and the inspirational men and women who shaped our country. Kids enjoy knowing the people they are learning about were/are real people, and this helps heighten their drive for knowledge.
