Working daily with a hundred young Picassos is an inspiring experience. My students bring to class each day an unending supply of energy and creativity. With this project, I seek to match their talent to a new art medium: animation.
I work as an art teacher for special needs students from low income backgrounds in grades ranging from K-12+. All of my students love animation. Last year we created flip-books and my students were fascinated that they could make their drawings move simply by changing a few lines.
This year I plan to create video animations of large scale charcoal drawings that the students will work on collaboratively. With each new mark or erased line, the students will record a few seconds of the drawing with a digital video camera. After a series of lines are drawn, the video can be played back as an animation! Imagine the possibilities: flowers can magically grow, bugs can crawl across the page, lightening and rain can pour from the sky.... After all recording is complete, students will work together in the computer lab to add titles, credits, and special effects to their work.
The process of animation is fun, but it also teaches a number of important social skills that are critical in my students' learning. Students must learn to listen to one another's ideas, take turns, and share in order to work collaboratively. Animation also requires patience and learning to follow multi-step directions. In addition, students will build on and develop skills in drawing as defined by the NYC Blueprint for the Arts benchmarks.
