"Everyone has a favorite book, some just haven't found it yet." This quote relates to my project because, as a reading teacher, I run into the phrase "I hate reading" a lot. I strive to make students interested in reading by creating several activities to make the stories come alive for them.
My seventh grade students come from multiple diverse backgrounds with a wide range of ability levels.
However, the sense of community among them is unmatched anywhere else. We are a close community where everyone knows everyone else and most people are related. Our students have a craving to learn like I've never seen and hearts of gold. On more than one occasion, they've come together to raise money or support students and families who are going through terrible times, which is why I believe they should be rewarded with the best supplies for their accomplishments.
My Project
If you could give me an endless supply of any classroom material, do you want to know what my answer would be? Pencils.
Pencils are such small, basic classroom materials, but the impact is immeasurable.
I go through a dozen or more pencils a day with my students. I teach in a low-income area, so by the third or fourth week of school, all pencils are gone and students are struggling to find a writing utensil. I firmly believe that penalizing students for not having a writing utensil is wrong, especially because many of my students can't afford something as basic as a pencil. So, I give them pencils so they can be successful and worry about the important things they're learning; not how they're going to find a writing utensil between classes.
