Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I serve 75 gifted and talented students. I work with second through fifth grade students in two Title I schools. My students come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds with the majority being English Language Learners. They are confident and eager to succeed in school and life.
If my students are to learn to become wise decision makers, they must learn that economics and financial literacy will play a vital role in the decisions that will help shape their future.
My students are learning to be well informed about economic principles. They are leaning to apply economic reasoning skills that will result in a greater ability to make wise choices as adults. I am continually seeking ways to teach adult economic concepts to my students. My students are eager to learn and prepare for their future. Even though they are extremely motivated, it is necessary to find techniques to prepare them for the economic challenges they will face as adults.
My Project
My Gifted and Talented students love learning about economics! They have already learned many of the basic economic principles and are ready to advance to a hands-on practical approach to learning. I would like for my students to participate in the computer-simulated Stock Market Game which will allow the students to use the knowledge of economic concepts to make investments using simulated money. The Stock Market Game will allow the students to experience real world "trading" in the Market without risking real money.
I am seeking funding for my students to be able to participate in the Stock Market Game in the Fall and Spring semesters this year.
The Stock Market has proven to be a good place to invest money and save for the future. My students will experience this important concept while learning about stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. They will learn about taking risks and analyzing the costs and benefits of investing money in the stock market.
The students will research a variety of companies with the idea of "buying" stock in selected companies they choose. Then the students will daily watch what happens to their simulated money in the ebb and flow of the Market.
