This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a very large, diverse group of students who are so excited to be back in the classroom this year! We are a Title I school that is located in a small rural community. All students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are lucky because even though funds are limited for my students, their families are so supportive and take an active role in their child's learning.

Our class has come together as a strong learning community that shares ideas and celebrates each other's learning.

Every day they inspire me and each other while they are working towards their learning targets. I love seeing the teamwork and listening to them share their strategies and problem-solving ideas. This is so important every year, but this year even more so, because many of them struggled with distance learning and limited internet access and resources.

My Project

The materials requested for this project will provide needed support to my students as they work to become proficient readers. I am working to find new strategies for the students who are struggling - the ones who avoid reading. Using new tools in the classroom will be a fun and exciting way for these students to make gains in their phonemic awareness.

The handheld mirrors will allow students to see how their mouths form the sounds of each letter and will increase their phonemic awareness.

The magnetic letters will give them the opportunity to connect the sounds to each letter and build words as they learn.
