KIPP schools are part of a nationwide charter school program designed to get kids to college. Many of the students coming into the 5th grade at our school, KIPP Bayview Academy, were entering with a reading level that was two or more years behind where it should be. To tackle this major problem, I was hired as the Reading Intervention Teacher. I teach 7 classes with 3-5 students in each class. We focus on reading comprehension and reading skills in order to catch our 5th graders up to where they need to be and set them up for success. Right now I used desks pushed together to create our small group atmosphere. I often have to get up to see what a student is working on or to listen to them read quietly. Since we are working in such a small, close group, it would be really nice if we could have a kidney shaped table to all work at. These tables are a half circle with the middle cut into so that I can sit in the middle and be able to attend to each student. This table would really help create a group environment where everyone can be seen and heard and be able to participate. It would really help our groups by pulling them together and giving them a sense of a team working closely together. Thank you for considering helping our students!
