Math and science are important, real-world concepts, but it is hard for students to understand that when they only ever see examples in a textbook. We want to explore these concepts through investigative activities and using manipulatives to create learning.
My class of fourth grade students attend a public elementary school in Utah.
We are a relatively new school and are still trying to build up materials to enhance student learning on a tight budget. The students are eager to dig a little deeper into concepts. They are full of questions and curiosity. As a teacher, my job is to channel that curiosity to help them gain a greater understanding of the world around them.
My Project
These resources will change my students' lives for the better. By integrating science and math, it will teach them to ask focused questions and use mathematical practices to build a base of knowledge. The materials are research-based and encourage students to demonstrate concepts by using a hands-on approach. For example, students might use mirrors to investigate symmetry of shapes and animals or use measurement tools to study rocks/minerals and how they change in the environment. These resources will provide them with the tools and guided activities they need.
Donations to this project will make a difference to each child.
No matter their background, it will arm them with the tools to feel successful as mathematicians and scientists. It will empower them to use questions to investigate the world around them and motivate them to continue exploring those ideas.
