Learning Stations For The Middle School Spanish Classroom
My students need a classroom set of coloring supplies for project station, flip chart paper, 2 portable DVD players for the movie station, and a new listening station.
Have you ever sat in a classroom and listened to the teacher drone on and on? My classroom is not like this but an active, highly engaging classroom, where students are allowed to make choices and be owners of their own learning.
Our school is labeled as urban-Appalachian.
Approximately 85% receive free and reduced lunch. Our school has been in academic emergency for the last five years and we are being observed by the department of education for our state. They are attempting to help us improve and meet our student's needs. My students are middle schoolers taking high school level world languages. Many of them have never been out of the circle of city. The world abroad is a strange and foreign place they have never seen. At least half if not more do not have access to computers. Their only access to the Internet is their cell phones or at school. I currently teach 3 seventh grade classes, one eighth grade class, and one sixth grade classes. My classes are big 35 students each. It is difficult to reach all my students in a whole class situation. The learning stations that I use allow the students to work in small groups and learn how to work together, building future work skills.
My Project
My choice of resources will be used to supplement the six learning stations that I am using to instruct my students. The DVDs players will allow me to set a movie station that students can independently access movie resources. The art supplies will be used in the small projects station. An example fo this at the moment is a graffiti wall students are creating helping them to identify cognates and their patterns thus allowing students to visual reinforce their learning in a kinematic manner. The flip chart would be used for brainstorming and use in the game station. The index cards would also be used for various games that students will play and eventually develop. The listening station would allow my students to listen to various learning activities without the headphones hurting their ears. A group of six students can also listen all at once. The whiteboard markers may be used in many 4 of the five stations in conjunction with the small 12 x12 whiteboards I already have.
The largest impact is teaching our students individual responsibility.
Stations also give our students an opportunity to practice skills they are learning in more than pen and paper modes. The new core standards require students to participate in critical thinking and expanding their own thought patterns. These material would help my kids to participate in their own learning and not simply passive learners just sitting in their seats doing nothing.
