I am a Speech and Language Pathologist servicing two K-12 districts in Wisconsin. My students qualify for special education services for a number of different reasons, however, the vast majority of my caseload consists of students, ages 3-6, with expressive and social language deficits.
My students constantly desire social interaction, yet they don't have the necessary skills to play with peers, engage with others, or simply take turns in a conversation appropriately.
I focus on developing these crucial speech and language skills through play. After all, Fred Rogers said, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”
My Project
These toys will allow my students to have access to new and exciting experiences, interactions, and play schemes that they may not have at home. I would like to purchase a racetrack and cars, building tiles, a cash register, pretend food and dishes, and assorted books to encourage imaginative and cooperative play between students.
Children today are conditioned to seek entertainment outside of themselves from technology sources.
Children do not need the most high-tech battery powered toys in order to learn; in fact, studies have shown that these toys restrict the learning of little ones. For this reason, my focus is on teaching play with traditional toys in order to let their minds take the lead. My students will learn patience, creativity, turn-taking, flexibility, sequencing, and so much more.
