Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, the pandemic has drastically changed my Spanish classes. Group work and individual conversations have been replaced by social distancing and computer screens. As the Spanish teacher for virtual and in-person students in middle school, I have been working hard to make sure that the kids hear, see and learn a second language, even in this very different setting, they deserve it!
Virtual teaching can be a challenge, but to ensure a high-quality engaging lesson, that gives students the education they deserve- screen sharing is vital so I can model and share information with the kids, but it greatly reduces the size of my Google Meet window, leaving me seeing only a few kids at a time.
Opening the chat, where many students share ideas and ask questions, diminishes it further. Adding a second monitor to my computer would allow me to have a dedicated screen just to see my students, leaving the other free to engage in Spanish content. When I can see their faces, I can see who gets it and who needs more clarification, it will make paying attention to each and every student more seamless and meaningful, to assure success for all!
My Project
These materials will be used to help both my in-person students and my virtual learners. While in-person and keeping social distance, we will engage in online programs to collaborate and work together through the internet.
Items will be used to make their learning experience pleasant, as well as exciting.
Learning a foreign language is already challenging, but when there is a mixture of in-person and online learners, they must all be well prepared to be able to stay connected and focused.
For me to have a visual of my students as well as the content I am teaching, would be ideal! Staying connected with the work they do as well as seeing their beautiful faces will help me give my students the education they deserve.
