Help me inspire middle school students to learn about and develop greater sensitivity toward people who are different from them in order to minimize their negative judgments, disdain, bullying, and acts of discrimination; all of which have been prevalent on my school campus. I plan to do this by inviting each student to research an unfamiliar social group and eventually make an ABC book to demonstrate comprehension, awareness, and empathy. Every letter of the alphabet will reflect a person, place, object, idea, advocacy group, legal case, milestone, or event associated with a particular social group. I am the librarian at a middle school where many students report that they suffer taunting, bullying, racial intolerance, and ostracism. I work closely with several teachers and academic departments to provide innovative and meaningful projects in the library to encourage the celebration of diversity, treating all people with dignity, and accepting all of humanity with compassion and open mindedness. This activity would be offered to all English and Social Studies classes and could affect up to several hundred students. I hope that you will want to share in the challenge and reward of helping our youngsters develop social empathy and tolerance in an engaging and significant way.
