I teach a group of energetic, loving, and bold third-grade students. Many of these children are faced with frequent challenges and obstacles in their daily lives that can make it difficult for them to come to school and be present in their learning. However, they continue to amaze me with their persistence and resiliency. Each day my classroom is filled with not only mathematicians, readers, and writers, but also leaders, comedians, care-takers, artists, explorers, helpers, creators, scholars, problem-solvers, and so much more.
The children in my class work hard to better themselves as students, but also as individuals in our society.
They care about each other and genuinely want to be good.
My Project
Children need explicit instruction on social and emotional skills just as they need to be taught core academic content. They must learn to self-regulate and to interact with others in a positive and respectful way. Some of these types of skills are developed through day-to-day experiences, but they can also be acquired by reading texts that tell a story and send a message.
Picture books with interesting story lines are highly engaging to students, and when supplemented with class discussions and activities, can teach important life lessons.
Our children need guidance and support when they face problems in their lives, both big or small. Picture books help us proactively teach the skills that are essential for students to become successful members of society.
