My students need some fun! I would love to be able to supply my students with a collection of fun, interactive games to let them practice the skills they are learning in class.
My students come overwhelmingly from low income homes. This doesn't stop them from striving to reach their full potential, however. My school itself is a title I school, and free lunch is school wide. My room has both a population of exceptional and ESL students who would move mountains for me if they could. Reading is rampant in my room, and my students cannot wait until the next opportunity to pick up their favorite book. Their love of learning runs deep!
My Project
These materials will be used to reinforce concepts learned in class. Students will be able to play bingo to learn about the main idea, or a board game to learn vocabulary. Suddenly, lessons that seem mundane and boring to some students, will seem more exciting and worthwhile.
Imagine a student who struggles to pay attention suddenly engaged, thinking about how important the information being taught would be to the game he would soon play.
Unfortunately, our school doesn't have a large collection of materials like this, and many of the games we do have are no longer aligned to current standards. Following a teach, play, practice approach for the school year, I believe, will make a world of difference for my students.
