Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my fourth grade Integrated Co Teaching class is full of energy and meaningful conversation, and students are expected to focus for long periods of time. About a third of my students struggle to focus for even five minutes! My students are some of the hardest workers I know, and they are always eager to learn.
My class is made up of general education students, special education students, and English language learners.
I work in a low income community where students cannot afford supplies and most receive free or reduced price lunch. I strive to give them all that I can both academically and emotionally.
My Project
Many students would rather work on the floor than at their desks. Having these lap desks and seat cushions will give them more options rather than to lean on the floor and try to get comfortable on a hard surface. Having two different types of lap desks to choose from will give student multiple options. Groups of students will be able to grab a cushion and work in another part of the room or in the hallway.
This will give students the ability to learn in a comfortable environment, which will let them think less about how hard the floor is and more about the task at hand.
The binders will help to keep special education students organized and to help the teacher prepare their portfolios which include their best work. It will give them more ownership of their work and let them feel like partners in their promotion.
I'm not so sure anyone will want to sit at their desks anymore!
