My Students

Middle school science class is where students bring life experiences and work together to investigate natural phenomena. From this they develop understanding of scientific concepts and discover the relevance and applications of those concepts. Hands-on investigation is at the core of this process!

My school is "stuck in the middle." Being a "moderate poverty" school, we do not receive the funding and resources provided to poorer schools, yet do not have the parent donor base of affluent schools.

As a magnet school, we serve students from throughout the district, encompassing a wide range of home languages, academic proficiency, and socio-economic levels. We are a full-inclusion school, so I teach all students, including those with special needs, gifted, and English learners. My colleagues and I have developed a rigorous STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) curriculum, constructed on a foundation of hands-on learning and real-world application. I employ a program of varied activities and instructional strategies to both motivate and teach my students. We use traditional and modern lab equipment and I assign projects using household materials.

My Project

My students will use the requested supplies in their exploration of chemistry, the electromagnetic spectrum, electricity and computer programming. They will use the chemicals, forceps and wood splints to learn about elements and polymers. The stencils, labels and cardboard will be used in an acid-base chemistry etching project. The beads and diffraction gratings will help students discover the nature of UV and visible light. Batteries will power their labs involving electrical circuits. Students will frequently use Post-it notes and pencil sharpeners when they connect what they learn from activities into a "Big Idea" in their interactive notebooks. Lastly, the Sphero programmable rolling robots, covers and iPad protectors will be used in a project combining physics and coding. These hands-on investigations will guide students to a deep and relevant understanding of the concepts they study!

The job of middle school teachers is to help students develop the skills and motivation necessary for success in high school, college, and the world of work.

Engaging in activities such as glass etching, observing light through lenses, creating circuits and programming robots in science class is just the way to accomplish this!
