I teach Reading and Reading Intervention to 6th and 7th grade students that belong to a very low socio-economic group. More than 70% of my students score at or below a fourth grade reading level. This year I am trying to engage all of my students' learning styles; auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and other needs that are required in the classroom. We spend a vast majority of time reading and building comprehension skills that are so important. However, while we are reading stories, biographies, newspapers, and other genres our students have no background knowledge or visualizations to help them connect things to their real life experiences which are sometimes lived out on the streets. I am working hard to incoporate more small group learning environments in my classroom to reach each child. To capture each student's interest, especially intervention students with severe needs in reading, I want to set up a station with a CD/cassette player and several headphones to listen to stories, poems, and songs, as they read. I would like to have DVD/VCR player for students to watch informative United Streaming DVD's and movies based on books that they have read. We also have a unit dedicated to Drama and I try to peek the students' interest by showing them a professional play. These activities enrich their writing skills with comprehension, comparision and contrast. Many of the stations I set up require simply reading and answering with written responses. I have seen much more progress when students have hands-on activities in which they can take part and educate their peers with what they learn. I have large classes of about 28 students. These few items would make learning much more engaging and rewarding for everyone involved.
