My classroom is a self-contained autism cluster for first and second grade. Although they are all on the autism spectrum, they all display special characteristics that make them individually unique. Throughout the day, my students will engage in meaningful learning experiences. They will engage in teacher time activities, function independently by completing work assigned, unpacking, cleaning their area before transitioning, play appropriately with their peers, as well as their typical peers. With special accommodations and teacher assistance, you can really see the effort that these young children will put in to being successful in their academic career.
My Project
I am always looking for fun ways to engage them in learning and play. It's so much fun they don't even realize the work of reading and math! Using reading skills giant activity dice, What’s the Rhyme? sorting houses and reading match-ups puzzles to practice rhymes and develop essential reading skills with every roll of the dice is way better than writing spelling words or copying words that rhyme.
Kids want to stand up, talk and interact with something tangible.
The same goes for math. Stack & Build addition/subtraction flip books and addition learning locks is application without the paper and pencil worksheet. We want to end the year with fun learning activities to reinforce what we have learned all year.
