My students are bright and caring children. They love to work together and learn in active ways! Our school is arts-integrated, which means we teach academic concepts and standards through the arts, including drama, visual arts, creative movement, and creative writing. We also teach and foster collaboration as a key cornerstone in our curriculum.
Our students learn how to work as a group through the creative process.
They take pride in their work and love to celebrate each other's accomplishments. Our school is such a positive environment!
My Project
Place value is a hard skill for young children because it is complex and abstract. Teachers typically use base ten blocks, but these manipulatives are only found in schools, so kids don't have much experience with them or access at home to practice.
Instead of giving the kids a tool that they won't connect with, how about giving them something they all know and love - Legos?
By teaching place value through Legos, the kids will immediately connect with them because they have seen them and played with them before. They will be able to use them as a tool at home because they are easily accessible for families. With the Legos, students can tangibly build a ten, break a ten apart and move these pieces into the respective place values. Learning will be fun and relevant!
