Our students are eager to learn and have been so excited to work in the garden. They think it is such a treat to have class outside, but we live in the South and it is fixing to get HOT!
Our school is a rural school down in the deep south of Alabama.
Between the nearby oceans and rivers and the farming land around us we are working very hard to educate our students about the environment and how to care for it. We have several recycling programs in place, but have decided to take their education to the next step. Since last summer we have been working to create an Outdoor Classroom. Each grade level has a raised flower bed. Some classes are growing flowers and some are growing vegetables. We have a variety of trees that have been donated and planted with the help of our students. The students are assigned watering days to go out and take care of our garden. Classes take walks through our ever growing nature trail and come back and research the plants and animals they see.
With spring and summer quickly approaching we are hoping to build a 20'x 20 outdoor classroom that will house picnic tables for our students to work at.
My Project
In the coming months our temperatures will easily reach the high 90's making it difficult for our young children to be outside to learn. This Outdoor Classroom will provide them the shelter they need to keep learning about, and how to take care of our precious environment as they grow their own flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Our students are really enjoying the fresh air as they learn and we are trying to learn and grow with them. We have also started a Junior Master Garden Club with 50 active students that stay after school twice a month to learn more about plants and to continue the beautification of our school. Right now we have to meet inside, but we are eager to have an outdoor meeting place for our Garden Club.
We have parents and volunteers ready to build the classroom as soon as we can get the materials.
This Outdoor Classroom will be used and enjoyed by all of our students, faculty, and parents for years to come.
Your donation will live on in this classroom and be a growing place for our students. They will learn, observe nature, and be able to see their garden and hard work growing before their eyes. We are so EXCITED about this project and can't wait to see it come to life.
