Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have 25 students. They are cute, curious, silly, and excited about learning. These seven and eight-year-old students want to succeed in school. They are eager learners who want to learn! Learning to be successful is very challenging with all of the budget cuts that affect the classroom. 95% of the students are English Language Learners and the adults in their household have a very limited grasp of the English Language. They also come from very low-income families. Most of which are single parent run. They all get free school-provided lunches and breakfast from a Title I school. Teaching students in the 21st century has become a challenge. 95% of them will not have a bright future growing up in the area that we are in.

Our class always says, "Do not follow your dreams, Chase them and catch them!

My students are very eager to artistically express themselves in many different ways. Using different tools to write and read in the classroom will enhance my students' learning and prepare them for the future. Integrating the arts into the curriculum will help my students learn the concepts taught. My wonderful students need to be able to learn be creative.

My Project

During this trying time of be away from the students and the students being away from their comfort zone. Teaching at a distance is different. I am trying to approach a distant learning situation with the same techniques and strategies that work for an in-person class will not work well. For example, when addressing a group of students at a distance via video conference call, it can be hard to gauge how what you have said is understood—there is not the immediate feedback that one gets when face-to-face with students (you can’t even be sure students heard you correctly, or at all, given the challenges with microphones, connection speed, ambient noise, and various distractions students may have at home). This is especially challenging when giving a complex assignment and made more complicated by the fact that students may be hesitant to ask clarifying questions at a distance. The way that I want to address such challenge, among others, is to use recorded screen cast recordings of me explaining the assignment —something the students can watch asynchronously as many times as they need.

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.

Students will be able to simply focus on the academic material at hand, and not whether their materials are going to work or not. Plus in this technology literate world, any interaction with updated technology will increase their literacy as well as their desire to learn and use the new technology!
