Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Working in an inner-city, low-income district in California has presented me with a plethora of challenges over the last 3 years. Each year, working conditions have become much more difficult. My school does not have the financial means to provide the basics for the deserving children that I teach.
Fortunately, my inquisitive and bright fourth graders have kept me working relentlessly to ensure that their futures are promising.
Of my 24 students, 4 are special education students who are fully included and mainstreamed into the general education classroom and 4th grade curriculum. Their academic levels range from Kindergarten to 3rd grade. The other 20 students' levels range from 2nd to 5th grade. All of my students are English Language Learners and qualify for free and reduced lunches.
My Project
Unfortunately, my students enter my classroom being years behind in math. Only a handful of my fourth graders know their math facts with automaticity. Because I teach in a low-income community, my students do not have the essentials that are necessary for their learning. They do not practice these skills at home because they do not have access to flashcards and very few of my students’ parents have the time to practice with them because they work two or more jobs to make ends meet. I can afford to purchase a few sets of flashcards but what my students really need is their own set of flashcards— to practice in class, at recess and at home independently.
Your help will ensure that my students have access to the most basic necessities for a functional classroom, which will help them to master the state standards in math.
I want my students to be able to practice their division facts daily, and your support will help us to achieve this goal.
