Learning Our Boundaries: Seating for Special Needs Preschoolers
Help me give my students unique seating for direct instruction that will facilitate working with the teacher and provide boundaries for where to sit and work.
Preschool education has become increasingly important, as kindergarten programs everywhere have become more academic. Kindergartners are expected to understand the school routine and environment upon entering class in the fall. My students are 3 and 4 years old, and attend a special needs preschool. All of my students have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They are eager to learn and please, but have difficulty communicating and functioning in a regular preschool setting. In my room, they learn to communicate through picture prompts and schedules. We learn through play and artwork. We work on transitioning from one activity to another, practice expressive and receptive language skills and try to make sense of the social rules around us. Almost all early learners have difficulty in self regulation, but children with ASD have an increased difficulty managing their emotions. Teaching children with limited verbal skills how to manage their emotions, is a vital part of preparing them for kindergarten.
My Project
Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder have difficulty staying in their seat and staying on task. As a preschool teacher with children on the autism spectrum, it is a daily struggle trying to get a child to sit with me for direct teaching time. Using a cube chair and tray will allow my students to better sit and focus on the tasks with the teacher.
By donating to my project, you will be helping my special needs preschoolers set boundaries, and learn how to better focus on tasks in the classroom.
The cube chairs will allow the child to be able to sit comfortably and stay in one spot. The tray will not only serve as an additional boundary, but will allow materials to be in easy reach of both the student and teacher. Together, the chair and tray will allow the student to focus more on the task with the teacher, than trying to sit still and in one spot.
