I am a Special Education Teacher working for Chicago Public Schools within an elementary school located on the Southwest side of Chicago. Over ninety-five percent of our student population are classified as low-income and receive free lunch. I am a Blended Preschool Special Education teacher which allows me to support Diverse Learners in a General Education Classroom (Team Teaching). I currently have fourteen scholars on my caseload which have diagnosis including Developmental Delays and/or Speech Impairments and Social-Emotional Disorders.
A large number (fifty percent) of the students that I service within the blended classroom (general education and diverse learners) are English Language Learners.
Both the Diverse Learners and English Language Learners benefit from a Multimodality (textual, aural, linguistic, spatial and visual resources) approach to learning.
I believe that every child is an individual that is capable of learning. Each child learns at his or her own pace. Teaching has always been my passion and I am honored to say that I am able to teach and give back to these students that reside in the same neighborhood in which I live.
“If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”
-Ignacio Estrada
Our students will be out of class for an extended period of time due to the pandemic. Upon return to the classroom it will be essential for me to have the necessary resources available to build on prior knowledge as well as to re-teach basic skills that will lay the foundation for learning for the rest of the school year. Unfortunately, our Diverse Learners will be the students to show the most regression during the school closures and I pledge to give my all to ensure that we recover from this as best as we can.
