I teach in a very small, rural district in deep East Texas. Many of our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds with varying physical, social and intellectual levels and many begin school at risk for educational and social struggles. Yet, my fifth graders come to school excited and ready to learn. I want to foster that excitement and provide them with the tools they need to succeed.
Our district is designated as a K-12 public school STEM academy, one of only a handful in the state.
We strive to provide advanced instruction in science, technology, engineering and math and provide students with opportunities to help them be successful in the workforce of tomorrow. In order to prepare our students to be problem solvers in tomorrow's workforce, we strive to provide them with hands-on tools to reinforce the concepts introduced in our STEM lessons.
My Project
Remote learning is a term that was nearly unheard of before 2020, yet teachers have stepped up and completely reinvented the traditional classroom learning environment in a short amount of time with limited resources. I have been teaching students face to face during the fall semester, while also teaching remote students at the same time. At one point, I was forced to quarantine and teach my classroom and remote students from my home. This experience showed me that there were limitations to what my Chromebook could do.
This HP laptop in this project will allow me to connect to document cameras and other HDMI and USB devices that do not connect to my current Chromebook.
This will allow me to make the transition from in-person to remote instruction seamlessly, giving my students minimal disruption in instructional time if we are forced to quarantine again. This laptop will also provide an additional device for my students to access STEM robot coding activities and is compatible with our Sphero robot.
