Help me give my students a joke book, ninja stories, ninja masks, bubble wands, and scratch cards to encourage them to continue being "ninja learners!"
The last time I had my precious, nineteen students with me in class was Thursday, March 12. What they believed to be a three-day weekend has turned into our year ending with 47 days of distance learning. That has been exceptionally grueling due to the many barriers that have presented themselves during this time... lack of technology, slow or no internet, absence of adult assistance, lack of basic supplies in student homes, and the inability to meet students on their specific level with kindergarten appropriate manipulatives. Of my 20 students, there are six that are not attempting any work, and on average, only about seven are able to complete their weekly tasks.
My Project
My students this year LOVED anything ninja! We read all the ninja books we could find and acted like ninjas going silently and stealthily down the halls. But most importantly, we were "learning ninjas" in the classroom! We learned that ninjas are extremely vigilant in all aspects of their life... watching, listening, learning, and acting. It made for many productive discussions.
My students have been ninjas everyday in our kindergarten and COVID-19 shouldn't stop them from living that!
I want to give my students books to read at home so that I know they are reading. All the books that I've chosen are within my students reading abilities. The joke book will not only give my students a chance to read a different genre, but also the opportunity to have future fun with family and friends retelling the jokes over and over again. Every student will get two of the ninja stories. I have no doubt that they will fall in love with them, just like they did with all the ninja books that we read this school year. I can visualize my students putting on their "ninja masks" and using the bubble wand as a "ninja sword" in order to retell the stories they read. And I know that they will love making notes on their secret scratch cards with their wooden stylus.
COVID-19 has dramatically altered my students' kindergarten year. I want to find a way for them to complete their first year of public school knowing that they are loved and cherished! Thank you for helping!
