Learning New Literacy Techniques to Help my Special Education Students!
I need help covering the cost of registration for a five-day professional development conference on literacy, specifically focusing on the Orton-Gillingham method for teaching struggling readers.
I teach special education at a Title I school in Los Angeles. Over 50% of our students receive reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast. My students have many needs, including students with autism, learning disabilities, and Down Syndrome.
Most of my students are two years below grade level in literacy and math.
Although they struggle with academics, every day my second and third grade students come to school enthusiastic to learn. Our school is a wonderful multicultural school that has a strong sense of community.
My Project
As a teacher of Special Education students, I am always looking for new ways to teach them to read. My students typically struggle with basic skills such as blending and reading with fluency. I was very excited to learn about the Orton-Gillingham literacy method! This research-based method is specifically geared toward students who have not been able to learn to read through traditional teaching methods.
This project will cover the cost of registration for a 5-day Orton-Gillingham literacy conference.
I have always wanted to teach this method to my students, but was unable to receive the specialized training until now. Besides learning from the trainers, I will be able to network and learn from the other teachers attending this conference.
Your help donating to this project means that my students in the new school year, and for many years to come will be able to hopefully achieve fluency in reading.
