My students are amazing! Many of them have persevered through the challenging situations that life has thrown at them. They are truly my heroes! Our school is a therapeutic day school for special needs students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Students typically attend our school due to challenging behaviors in general education buildings. These behaviors are often physically or verbally aggressive, either towards staff members and/or students and themselves.
Most students that come to our school have typically experienced traumatic events in their lives and/or suffer from mental health disabilities.
The goal of our classroom is to determine effective interventions so that students can transition back to their general education settings.
My Project
My students have very unique needs! Because of this, I need to be knowledgeable on a vast number of topics ranging from engagement strategies to students who have experienced trauma, to students with high social and emotional needs. As a teacher, I try to never stop learning and growing to be a better teacher for my students.
Your donations will provide me with books to read this summer so that I can keep learning how to provide my students with an emotionally safe classroom, where they can heal from trauma and be engaged in academic learning.
The books requested in the project cover the topics of social and emotional learning, a trauma-informed classroom, and engagement strategies. I would like to read the books this summer, and then loan them out for other staff members in our building to read throughout the school year. It is important to my students' success that I am knowledgeable about current research, topics, and research-based interventions.
