As part of a low-income community, many of our students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, my team and I try to provide our students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. They are full of life and energy and are hungry to learn about the world around them. They are very kind young people and they are learning to work as a team since we have adopted a project-based learning model.
My Project
Most teachers agree, the quality of school supplies--ESPECIALLY pencils and dry erase markers--makes a huge difference in their effectiveness. Both of these items are on our supply list, but with many of our families coming from low-income situations, the materials that are sent do not nearly work as well.
These tools that I am requesting will be used daily for students to be able to "show what they know".
The more students write and share their thinking with others, the more their learning is ingrained in their own brains.
We use white boards and markers for math mostly, but we also use the dry erase markers for writing and reading.
In reading, in order to save paper and precious copy costs, we put reading materials in page protectors and kids are able to mark the text with their dry erase markers as they go to enhance their comprehension. When were done with a lesson we erase the sheets and are able to reuse the passages year after year.
Having a supply of pencils and markers will keep the students learning.
