Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 2nd grade in Durham, NC. My students are diverse from low economic homes. I currently teach a busy group of 20 second grade students. The majority of my children are far below grade level. These children come to school every day with very diverse needs. As their teacher and caregiver, it is my goal to ensure that my students are the most successful that they can be. In my room, we constantly look towards to future by considering ourselves the Penn State Class of 2032. Every little bit that you fund, a child in Durham gets closer to that goal.
My Project
My students come from families of low income. Often times, they do not play enough while at home. This can cause a lot of students to feel the need to get up and get those wiggles out during academic time. The amount of wandering around the room can cause distractions within the learning environment.
My goal is to give students choice and an appropriate way to move during academic time, decreasing the distractions within our classroom.
I believe that flexible seating can provide my students with the tools they need to be successful. With flexible seating, my students will have the chance to be in control of their own learning, as well as their bodies. Yoga balls, wobble stools and sit upons provide the students with an appropriate amount of leg and bottom movement as the work. Chair bands can assist students who feel the need to move their legs. Scoop chairs allow students to work within the room so that they are separated from distractions. Regular stools are great for students to practice sitting up tall. Each week, my students will get to choose the seating option that works best for them.
As kids, it is natural to have a busy body. I want to provide a successful learning environment for my 2nd graders that allows them to move and be comfortable!
