My students are part of a community that highly values education, but my students have not kept pace with their peers. How can we close the achievement gap when students lack the skills and materials necessary to succeed? A review of the students in my class and their records indicate that the students with disabilities are part of the lowest performing sub-group at the school. The students in my classroom are students with Specific Learning disabilities, low cognitive functioning, and severe attention deficit issues that impact their access to learning. The students in my classroom need alternative seating methods in order to be able to focus and learn the difficult material I am presenting. They also need a variety of materials and engaging interventions to learn the mathematics common core curriculum.
My students often do not use strategies to become better mathematicians.
My plan is to use a variety of problems, programs, and technology to hook students into mathematics, while providing alternative ways to move while sitting in class to promote better concentration.
My Project
My students have a wide range of disabilities. They need lots of engaging things to do, different ways to sit, and reminders of things they can't remember while learning mathematics. The figits help those with attention problems. The white boards hold everyone accountable to participate and are a great break from pencil and paper. The posters and desk charts will students remember. The one legged stools will help those who can't sit stay in one place. Many of these items are good rewards for effort from students. Many of these items help students give their best effort. Wired computer mouse and mouse pads will help those who struggle with the touch pad on a computer. Visual timers will help keep students on pace, where they struggle to tell time.
