Learning Math with Sumblox

My students need Sumblox. By manipulating the blocks and stacking them in different combinations, children can learn to recognize numerals, explore addition and subtraction and practice basic multiplication, division and fractions.

My Students

We learn on our feet not in our seat! That is our first grade classroom motto. We sing, dance, share, and learn together each day. I am a proud teacher in a Title 1 school in Rhode Island.

We are a joyful classroom that loves to learn!

I am preparing my students for the 21st century by providing opportunities for communication, collaboration and creativity. Our classroom is a safe place where learning is fun and children learn at their own pace based on their developmental needs.

Sometimes I put on my super hero costume and fly into my classroom to introduce Narrative Writing or we all dress up in 1950’s outfits to celebrate the 50th day of school. Yes, my lessons are aligned to the Common Core standards and best practice but, more importantly, they are sprinkled with joy!

My Project

Sumblox are a set of wooden blocks shaped in the numerals 1-10. Each block is proportional in size to the value of the number. So a 2 block is twice as tall as a 1 block and a 10 block is ten times as tall.

Kids can see patterns in numbers easily and gain a better understanding of the relationships between numbers.

They can see how numbers change in predictable patterns by the differing heights of the block towers.

SumBlox assist and empower students to develop a deeper understanding of numbers, addition and subtraction and fractions. They reduce student stress by helping kids understand how the math works.
