Learning Math with Rekenreks

My Students

My students are first graders in a high poverty elementary school in Delaware. All my students have a wide range of abilities and include special education students and English language learners.

My students love to learn, and I want to make learning fun and exciting for them.

They come to school every day ready to learn. They love to listen to stories, engage in literacy discussions, work collaboratively to solve math problems, and share their experiences through their writing. My students work very hard every day to master new skills and knowledge.

My Project

Allowing my students to use Rekenreks to solve math problems will help keep my students engaged in learning while providing the support they need to solve complex problems. We will use the Rekenreks for counting, solving equations, and solving story problems. The beads on the Rekenrek will also provide a visual to allow all students to quickly learn to recognize groups of five and ten.

Rekenreks are required to teach our math curriculum, but they are not provided.

All of my students would benefit from this useful resource, but they would be an extremely helpful for my special education students. Rekenreks will give them concrete objects to touch and move to assist in counting and solving problems.
