Learning Math Through Reading

My Students

As my students struggle with grade level reading, it's even more challenging for my students to grasp math concepts, without relating it to real life problems and situations.

My students are enthusiastic 3rd graders who struggle with learning and are slowly progressing towards grade level standards.

Although I do I have a cluster of gifted and talented students, the majority of my class fall below the basic abilities of literacy. My students deal with ADHD, auditory and visual processing delays and various learning disorders. We are a public school and with support of our community we able to get arts materials in class, but continue to have a difficult time to obtain materials to assist in differentiating and addressing the many learning styles of our students.

My Project

With these resources, our classroom will be able to address the various math needs of our unique classroom. All of our 3rd graders will be able to enjoy math through short stories and make connections to real life situations. Students will begin to see the importance of math and hopefully relate math to other curricular areas. Students will now have access to literature related to our math topics and read in pairs or independently. With the new resources such as this, we will be able to enjoy and discuss math in different ways.

Not many teachers in our school have these resources and can be used to change the lives of such a diverse community.

Not only can this collection of math literature be used in the traditional way, we will be able to help the students address a wide range of standards.
