I teach Math to two classes of third grade students on the South Side of Chicago. So many of my third grade students struggle with basic math concepts. Stories involving math can bring these concepts to life for students and help them develop deeper understanding. This grant will provide quality children's literature that not only demonstrates how math is integrated into our daily lives, but also encourages children to read and write about math. I am passionate about helping my students find the exciting and creative aspects of Mathematics. Books about math often demonstrate the fact that many problems have more than one correct solution or more than one way of arriving at a solution. In addition, these books will provide children with the opportunity to read and use math vocabulary in places other than math worksheets and tests. They will help children comprehend more difficult math concepts as they identify with characters and make connections with events in the stories. These books will be available in our classroom library for whole class activities as well as for students to read independently or to share in small groups. Students will have the opportunity to write and draw about the math used in each story, and to think critically about how they use math in their own lives. In these ways, the availability of this literature will enrich my students' understanding and appreciation of important math concepts!
