Math is an important skill for people of all ages to understand and appreciate. As adults, our brain notices natural patterns and assigns meaning for us to use. In the minds of 1st graders, this is a skill that we are trying to teach. Patterns, measuring, estimating, shapes...all pieces of simple math concepts that can cultivate a joy and passion for math and a higher-level of thinking and problem-solving in other areas of life. Exposure to such things is something that most of my 28 first graders are missing in the low-income, or equity plus school that I teach in. The aim of this proposal is to provide both exposure and language/vocabulary through fun and engaging books about such mathematical topics. These two concepts are important because: (1) Exposure: Most of my children come from homes of limited resources in regards to parental time, learning materials at home, and early exposure to exploration of learning and mathematical concepts. As a result, even my most advanced students are missing fundamental basics. (2) Vocabulary: With the lack of exposure, a lot of my children come in not reading and lack vocabulary. In addition, about half of my students are Hispanic and do not have English speaking parents. Introducing vocabulary through stories allows my kids to have a visual cue or representation to associate with the word on the page. These two are perhaps the most important reasons that I can think of to ask for twenty books that focus on mathematical themes. These books will be used to teach supplemental math lessons required by my district to compliment the Saxon math program used at my school and further help students to master North Carolina objectives. I would like to thank you in advance for the time and consideration taken in reading this proposal.
