On March 12, 2020 my students and I left school in the afternoon not knowing that it was the last time we would physically be together for the rest of the school year. We were in the middle of units, preparing for testing, excited for upcoming field trips... comfortable with our safe, everyday routine. That is no more.
This pandemic has changed the trajectory of their school year, and their lives.
They are now adapting to learning at home. Homes where so many of them students already have so little. Some have technology at home, some do not. Some have family support at home, some do not. Some have the necessary materials to continue learning at home, but MOST do not.
My already underprivileged students are facing a new reality that none of us could prepare them for. How do we reach them from afar? How do we ensure they are being taken care of, that they are fed and safe and ABLE to learn while out of the classroom? We know they are resilient. They have grit and won't give up!
My Project
When our school first closed on March 13, we thought we would be away for just a couple of weeks. Teachers and students were not prepared to learn at home for the rest of the school year. But that is our reality.
My students rely on school for so many things.
We provide them an education and everything they need to access their learning, as well as safety and nourishment for their bodies. 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch daily. I worry, not only about how they will access learning at home but whether they have sufficient food while school is closed. These materials will help them to continue to learn at home and interact with remote learning lessons. Snacks and juice boxes will also ensure that they have a little extra in their bellies.
