I currently teach kindergarten students in North Minneapolis; however, next year my school will be founding a K-1st campus in St. Paul's Northend. This opportunity will provide me with a chance to serve a community close to my heart while also allowing me to work with a majority English Learner (EL) population. As exciting as this will be, the reality is, many of my students are experiencing school for the first time, and would benefit greatly from additional visual supports and engaging materials that address multiple learning modalities in the classroom.
My students are passionate, dedicated, loving, and hardworking - not only are they overcoming barriers related to race and socioeconomic status while trying to master the Common Core State Standards, but many of them are also dealing with significant trauma due to the loss or absence of a loved one as well as the additional hurdle of mastering a new language.
Because I am teaching in a Title I school where resources are often limited, I want to raise money to purchase items that will strengthen students' mastery of the content as well as enhance their overall learning experience. All children deserve access to a great education.
My Project
In an early childhood classroom, I cannot think of a more frequently used and loved piece of equipment than a sturdy easel - it is used for writing morning messages, displaying the problem of the day during math meeting, providing an engaging, hands-on learning space during center time, and as a writing space for capturing students' thoughts and ideas during read-alouds and shared discussion times. By contributing to this project, you are helping to get an easel into the classrooms of 5 highly qualified, extremely dedicated teachers. Therefore, reaching the eyes, hands, and minds of over 100 children in the area in just a single school year! Your donation will truly make a difference.
