I teach kindergarten in a high need community. My school is a Title I school where most of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Despite our needs, I hold high expectations for all of my students.
Most of the students I teach come from homes where there is no background knowledge to build upon when entering kindergarten. Most of it starts at school. I have to build knowledge of the alphabet, concepts of print, and many other things they need to know to move on to first grade. Almost half of the students at our school come from ethnic backgrounds. So, not only am I introducing them to the alphabet and teaching them letters, sounds, numbers, and even how to hold a book, I am also teaching some how to speak English. That's why I am asking you to help me provide my students with an environment that will give them the opportunity for learning that they deserve.
I do a lot of my teaching in small groups. This is where my students receive additional intensive reading and math instruction. My small groups consist of 6 students or less at times which provides them more time with me in a smaller group setting. This instruction is geared toward each student directly. During this time I need a tabletop easel on which I can write words and letters. The easel I am requesting is dry erase and magnetic on one side. This way I can use magnetic letters to show my students how letters make words. On the other side a pocket chart is placed that I can also use to show different things. The story wands I am requesting will give my students opportunities to show their comprehension skills of stories we read during small groups. The basket center I am requesting will provide an excellent way for my students to turn in the work they complete so that I may check it.
