My Students

I remember looking forward to my bedtime story each night as a child. It surprises me to find that many of my students are not exposed to the joy of read alouds at home, and at times are not even familiar with the Grimm and Andersen fairy tale that were the main stay of my childhood.

My first graders are entering the most active year of reading development.

My classroom serves both English language learners and those receiving special education services. My school is also Title I. These challenges are not daunting to me or my students. Expectations and results remain high as gaged by our school's exemplary status.

My Project

The addition of a listening center in my room will provide "another voice" to model fluency and prosody. It will also provide a student centered exploration of the concepts of print as they read along with the story. The blank Cd's will be used to personalize stories and lessons. I plan to even have some parents record stories for a personal touch to the experience.

The listening center is a cornerstone of Language Arts centers which provide me with the opportunity for small group intervention.

It will be a valuable tool to instill the joy of reading in my students.
