Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember when you engaged in pretend play and wanted to be a doctor, a chef, or a salesperson? My students need dolls and accessories, play food, and a storage center for their dramatic center. While they engage in pretending, they will also be able to learn lifelong skills.
My preschoolers come from low-income families in Southern California where they may not have the opportunity to practice pre-reading and early math skills learned at school.
Most of them are English learners and pretend play will give them the opportunity to use language in conversations with their peers as they also learn math, social-emotional, and cognitive skills as well.
My Project
Students will have many opportunities to practice and enhance their math skills. They will be able to sort play food, pretend to sell fruits and vegetables using their cash register. By doing this they will be gaining confidence in themselves which is important for their their self-esteem. They will also understand the power of language while they pretend play with others learning new words that will give them the means to organize play. The materials will provide my low income students with a high quality environment that will promote learning through their play.
This project is important for my students because the materials will give them many opportunities to learn while they play.
They will continue dreaming about being nurses, doctors, chefs, mothers, etc.
