My Project

The main goal of our Career Choices class is to help students explore future career possibilities and prepare them for productive, independent lives after graduating high school. Knowing how to clean floors, fold clothes, and disinfect surfaces are essential skills for living on your own as an adult. Occasionally, some jobs (such as service industry jobs) even require their employees to clean bathrooms or shared spaces as part of the job.

The pandemic has caused staffing shortages in many fields and schools are not immune to this issue.

My school has struggled to keep custodial staffing numbers where they need to be so if we do not clean our floors ourselves, they do not get cleaned. At this point, my floors have only been mopped once in the last 6 months and it is at the point where it is upsetting my students to have to learn in an unhygienic learning environment and they are ready to take action.

Rather than have the students continue to deal with the mess, I would like to incorporate these vital life skills into my daily/weekly instruction. These materials will not only encourage students to take ownership of their classroom but will also give me my planning time back to devote to my instructional duties and improve the quality of education my students are receiving.
