Learning Life Skills Through the Art of Crocheting
Help me give my students the opportunity to teach life skills such as patience, mistakes, how to deal with failure, and perseverance through the art of crocheting.
Some students come to school to learn and some come to be loved. It's through love and relationships that a child can open their mind to learning. Teachers in our world today have to fight many battles. One of those battles is the need for instant gratification. Making classrooms more inviting is a way to help the students feel more at ease and less intimidated.
I work in a Title I school that has 75% of the student population receiving free or reduced rate meals.
Some students also receive food for the weekends. We have great programs that help our students have access to school clothes and supplies. What we don't have is the funds to give teachers the tools needed to help our students work in a more creative, relatable way to engage and build relationships with our students.
My Project
Patience, perseverance, stamina, how to deal with failure and mistakes are all life skills that need to be taught. As educators, we are constantly working on these skills during our lessons. Students who play sports or do other extracurricular activities are learning these skills, without really knowing they are.
In a title campus, most of our students cannot afford to do these extracurricular activities that teach these life skills.
Therefore, I would like to start a free crochet club at school for students interested in learning how to crochet. As a child myself, I was lucky enough to have a woman teach me how to crochet for free. I can still remember the patience she showed me as I learned this craft. Through the art of learning to crochet, I plan on working with the students on these essential life skills that come with learning a something new such as patience, perseverance, stamina and learning how to deal with failure and mistakes.
My hope is that through these crochet lessons, we will see an increase of these life skills being applied within their own learning of academic during their school career.
