Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of working at a public charter school in the San Fernando Valley that promotes leadership among our students through service-learning projects and studying the contributions of inspirational world leaders. It is a low-income school with a high percentage of students that qualify for free and reduced lunch and breakfast. Many of the students are English Language Learners. The school offers an inclusive special education program to ensure we are meeting the needs of all students.
In addition to fostering leadership skills in our students, we develop the students' social and emotional skills through the use of animals, such as therapy dogs.
The students that I work with are creative, bright, and eager to learn.
My Project
My Kindergarten students are playful and learn best through hands experiences that help them access the curriculum. Foundational skills, like letter recognition, are crucial to developing early literacy. Students in Kindergarten focus on new letters weekly, and these materials will help maintain their interest.
Students in my class learn through play and are extremely creative.
These etch-a-sketch boards will help them practice their letters in a fun, non-traditional way. The traceable cards will help ensure students are using proper letter formation when practicing. The alphabots are another fun way for students to gain more exposure to all the letters and learn about them in a tactile way.
