Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
First grade is the place to be! Students within this community come from extreme poverty. They enter the classroom eager to learn and are introduced to new things throughout the year.
I work with a group of amazing, diverse, bilingual students who soak up new information as they explore the tools in the classroom.
My first-grade classroom is set up to be student-led and allow the students to work at their own pace. As a result, students are able to develop at their level in a very low-stakes environment. The activities stimulate their interest while helping to make sense of the world around them. There is no greater place to be than a first-grade classroom!
My Project
Funding this project will help me create a classroom environment conducive to learning. Students can figure out how they best learn, whether it be on the floor close to the teacher, standing up in the back of the room at an adjustable desk, sitting on a wobble chair with a clipboard, or sitting at a traditional table. The choice will encourage them to take ownership of their learning!
Flexible seating provides many benefits to students.
Besides providing students with choices, it also allows students the opportunity to wiggle, fidget, wobble, kneel - whatever they need to do to help them focus. Comfort is also something flexible seating provides. While one may be most comfortable standing, another may be most comfortable sitting on a cushion on the floor.
Flexible seating also provides a better way to collaborate than traditional desks or tables set up in rows. Students can move easily to form groups without so many desks or tables taking up classroom space. They can also find the spot in the classroom that works best for their group to be focused.
