Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a Title I school, about half of my students are on free or reduce lunch program. They are in desperate need of school supplies to help them learn in grow in the classroom. I currently teach 26 first graders and will be moving up to third grade next year. Of my 26 students, 8 are English learners. They are always come to school ready to learn and are excited to learn new concepts. My students care for each other by being responsible, respectful and safe at school.
My Project
Most of my students don't have access to books at their instructional or independent levels. Without the practice of daily reading, they won't be able to grow as readers or learn to love reading! They take such good care of my books and always return them to me eager to get a new set of books to take home and read. I want to instill a love of reading in my students that will last them their whole life! As students move in to third grade, they start transitioning from learning to read to reading to learn. My students have shown a great interest in the "Magic Tree House" series this year during class read-alouds. I would love to be able to have a set that I can send home with individual students throughout the year. I have students at all different reading levels in my class, so I also want to make sure I'm providing more challenging and non-fiction books for students who are ready to take those on. These will be fulfilled by the "Merlin Missions" series and the non-fiction companion books. These books are perfect for students because they tie both history and science in to reading, allowing students to find books they are interested in to read. These interests can then grow and allow students to branch out in to reading other books to continue learning more about their individual interests!
