My classroom is a K-2 autism classroom in the city of Providence. We are a title I school, every child gets free breakfast and lunch (I provide snack for them everyday as well).
When I started this September the classroom was empty and it was the first day of school.
The children in my classroom have different academic needs which means we need lots of materials.
I have children in the class that are non verbal and require the pecs system to communicate, some children are working on academic skills, while others are just learning classroom routines and expectations.
My Project
Many of the children in our classroom have a hard time using the materials that we have to offer. Having learning items that are enclosed offers a safe fun alternative to learn important academic skills such as letter formation, counting and sorting.
Having a variety of hands on learning materials the are engaging are key to a successful classroom.
Children will work longer when they are interested in what they are doing. The children in our classroom learn through play and interacting with the materials that they are using.
The children will be able to work one to one or in small groups with the teacher or TA using the different instant learning center boxes. Other children will be able to work independently using the enclosed maze games. Having enclosed materials will be helpful for our strudents who like to throw small objects or put them in their mouths.
The children love to use clay or dough so having mats that have letters and numbers will help them learn while using the dough. They will get their sensory needs met as well as learning the letters of the alphabet and numbers.
Many of their IEP goals are to learn the alphabet, counting to 10 or 20, sorting, learning sight words and how to write their names. Having these materials will help these children meet their IEP goals.
