Help me give my students tangrams to practice learning our shapes and comparing their attributes plus comprehension cards to help build reading comprehension.
My children are so sweet but so behind as a result of distance learning last spring. I teach in a rural area with an approximate population of one thousand. It is a logging town with a couple of logging mills. I teach in a K-6 school with one hundred and eighty-three students. There is one other school in town for grades 7-12. Most of these children come from low-income homes. Most of these children never go anywhere to expand their horizons. One of these children has never seen so many things that most of us take for granted, such as ponds, lakes, and streams. There is an Indian casino nearby, and the kids think it is a treat if their parents take them there to swim in the pool.
My Project
One of our math standards is for students to compare different sizes and colors of shapes. Currently, we only have one size and color of each shape, so it’s very difficult for students to meet this standard.
Due to distance learning in the spring, my students are way behind in reading and comprehension.
In twenty years of teaching, I have never had students coming into second grade this far behind. These comprehension cards are an excellent way for them practice reading and comprehending what they read. I had cards similar to these in my classroom when I was a child and absolutely loved doing this activity!
